Dealing With Stress

Only about half of Americans concerned about stress try to deal with it properly, a survey said Thursday.

Many turn to unhealthy behaviors such as overeating and smoking for relief and don't exercise, says a report published in the by the American Psychological Association. Despite the numbers of adults who are very concerned about stress, only 55 percent are making an effort to manage it. That's a trend that could have long-term consequences for the health of Americans.

Depression, anxiety attacks, heart attacks, strokes and obesity are all health issues that can some from dealing with stress improperly. People who self medicate with smoking cigarettes, marijuana, prescription pills and alcohol can add other issues like cancer and drug addiction to the mix.

Standard methods of dealing with stress like exercise, sleep, and meditation are all recommended to deal with stress. Depending on the level of unhealthy behaviors that people resort to, professional counseling may also be necessary.
